The province opened up Lake Temagami islands to leasing in 1906. Each title was recorded in the “Temagami Islands” (“Doomsday) book, and the practice continued when island ownership became available in the 1940s. Each entry lists the surveyor’s name and date, the grantee’s name and date, and the acreage. Commencing in the 1930s, private surveying companies and the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests conducted surveys when island lots were being offered. These were also recorded in the book, as were some late 19th-century mining patents. (photo by Marty Martelle)
